MONGOLIA RIVER ADVENTURES

CONTACT

Mongolia River Adventures (MRA) is the only adventure tour company specifically dedicated to the pursuit of river running throughout the isolated, rugged landscapes of Mongolia. We can tailor a trip for any combination of whitewater, fishing, fantastic scenery, hiking, cultural exchange, archaeology, and much more. We LOVE exploring and introducing people to remote and exciting rivers in this diverse land!

Our mission is to provide a fun-filled adventure for our guests, safely boating Mongolian rivers, experiencing some of the most pristine wilderness areas nature has to offer, and exploring an amazing place in a culturally and environmentally respectful manner.

History

Mongolia River Adventures was founded by professional river guide, Pat Phillips. Working and playing on whitewater around the globe for the last 20 years, Pat has rafted and safety-kayaked in such diverse locales as Grand Canyon, Central and South America, Nepal, New Zealand, China, and Mongolia. Pat recognized the river running potential of Mongolia while on a cross-country motorcycle journey there in 2007. Pat has spent the intervening years exploring and scouting promising rivers and streams throughout Mongolia’s vast expanse and perfecting the logistics necessary to experience the best river adventures in Mongolia.

In addition to facilitating adventure and cultural exchange on river expeditions, Pat has a Master’s Degree in river ecology, which strengthens his advocacy for Mongolian rivers increasingly impacted by mining and development.

Aktolkun Maksum, or “Agii”, was born in Bulgan Soum (300 km east of Ulgii), one of the most mountainous areas of Mongolia, and as a child spent his summers hiking and riding horses through the vast Mongolian country-side. After receiving a Bachelor of Education from University of International Languages in Almaty, Kazakhstan in 1999, he became an English teacher in the public school system. He speaks four Languages; Kazakh, Mongol, English, and Russian, and has over ten years experience leading multi-week backpacking, horse trekking, mountain climbing, and eagle hunting expeditions in western Mongolia’s National Parks. Agii knows western Mongolia like his backyard, his logistical planning is superb, and his fun-loving nature and respect for the land are infectious.

Bulganbayar Baatar “Bulgaa” is a native of the Altai Mountains, and grew up herding animals around the hillsides. Bulgaa’s interest in geography took him to the National University of Mongolia in UB where he is now engaged as a lecturer and Ph.D. candidate in the geography department. Naturally drawn to tourism, he has been managing and leading expeditions throughout Mongolia for over ten years. In 2004 he helped found “Horse Back Tour” Company and Khishig Horse Camp, and is also founder of “Explore Great Altai LLC.” Bulgaa’s hardworking yet relaxed demeanor, and extensive knowledge of the environment and history of Mongolia, make him an asset to any expedition.
